Author interview with Debbie Manber Kupfer

What’s the hardest part of writing YA fiction?

Finding teen readers and reviewers. I love writing my stories and have built up a decent following among adults, but reaching teens is harder.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

When I was about 8 years old and submitted my first story to the Puffin Post. It was about how I’d been transformed into a ladybird (ladybug) for one day and what happened to me. I had a little mention in the Puffin Post. (See even back then I wrote about shapeshifters!)

Have you found any clever ways to market your books to YA readers?

I didn’t have the courage to do this this year, but next year I plan to take a whole bunch of bookmarks to Warped Tour and give them out to everyone waiting in line.

What YA books have had the greatest influence on your writing?

Harry Potter – particularly book 3 when she introduces the animagi. Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments. Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart The Book Thief – Zusak.

Author Bio: Debbie Manber Kupfer grew up in London and today lives in St. Louis. She is a writer of puzzles and fiction and the author of the fantasy series, P.A.W.S. She believes that with enough tea and dark chocolate you can achieve anything!
