Author Interview with Raquelle Stepney

What’s the hardest part of writing YA fiction?

It is crucial that everything has an underlining element to it. When I write I tend to want to get straight the meat of the story, but to fill the pages with imagination and detail takes time. I have to drag out everything or break it up in chunks, so the story still flows. The most difficult is setting the scene and showing not telling, and getting it clear on paper. But when I reread as I go that helps.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I would probably say when I was young when I started writing song lyrics and it evolved from that to poems to screen plays and short stories for contest on figment. I started working on Entrapment in 2010. The defining moment when I definitely wanted to be a writer is when I got into acting in high school. I knew I wanted to write screenplays, but I also wanted to write stories. When I got Entrapment in the mail I filled overwhelmed with joy. I said yup this is definitely for me. It took a lot out me just get to this point but it is worth doing. When I got home I cried for a moment said to myself am I crazy…You want to go through this all the time. I must be a masochist…lol well I love the end result…the in print and I can hold something I created with my hands is awesome!!!

Have you found any clever ways to market your books to YA readers?

Yes, but it’s taking a lot of time.

What YA books have had the greatest influence on your writing?

The Clique series by Lisi Harrison, Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter, and Oh. My. Gods. series by Tera Lynn Childs.
