Guest Post + Giveaway: Karice Bolton, Author of Awakening

Author Karice BoltonHappy Friday everyone! :) Today I am welcoming Karice Bolton, author of Awakening and Legions, which are the first two books in her paranormal romance series, The Watchers Trilogy.

Today she’ll be talking about her latest book obsession, as well as how having a little bit of courage can affect your life in a big (and good) way. Then she’s been kind enough to give you all a sneak peek at the latest book in The Watchers Trilogy, Legions.

Afterwards, she’ll be giving away one paperback copy of Awakening. So stick around and be sure to enter to win after the post!

Karice Bolton is a paranormal romance/urban fantasy author living in the Pacific Northwest. Karice is married to her high school sweetheart and they have two wonderfully cute English bulldogs. She loves to ski, hike, cook, garden, and play piano. But most of all, she loves to read and write whenever she has a free moment! If she could live in a winter wonderland all year long she would!

Zombies, Courage, and Being Human by Karice Bolton

Hey everybody!

First I wanted to thank Sarah for the chance to say hi to you all and provide a guest post on her awesome blog! I am the author of The Watchers Trilogy, which is a paranormal romance trilogy set in the beautiful Pacific Northwest! (Yes, it’s where I live so I might be a little biased) It does kind of rain a bit… Okay, won’t get sidetracked. Awakening and Legions are the first two books in the trilogy and are available now!

Believe it or not, what I decided to write about was not only my own series, but another book thanks to a book club pick that I normally wouldn’t have chosen. It totally flipped my idea on zombies and what a zombie story can be! I also wanted to share a quick little piece from Legions, the second book in The Watchers Trilogy, which is out now. Hope you enjoy a peek!! But first, my completely unexpected love affair with everything zombie! I can’t believe I’m even typing that!

Here it goes… A lot of you may have already read it, and I would also love to hear what you think! I’ll be checking the comments and would love a fun non-zombie dialogue!! I love hearing what people think about books!! If you have another zombie recommendation that would be cool too! Okay so, drum roll… Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion! Now before I continue, I must say that I have never ever read a zombie book. In fact, I didn’t think I would ever have the least bit of an urge to even go down the zombie path. I love vampires, angels, demons, witches (you get the idea)! Anyway, I do love watching a good zombie movie now and then, but never had a real pull to read about zombies. That has been changed. Isaac Marion wrote an absolutely beautiful book centered around zombies. The psychological aspects that Warm Bodies explores about being a zombie is utterly fascinating and really highlights the joys, letdowns, and everything in between about being human through a zombies POV. Because so much is coming from the perspective of a former human (aka zombie) it created a love affair for me – a love affair with being a human. I’d check it out! It’s a pretty quick read and definitely worth it! Plus they are making a movie!

For my little part regarding my trilogy, I wanted to talk about one of the underlying themes, besides romance and fighting for the ones you love of course, and that is – courage! For those of you who have read Awakening and Legions, you’ve been able to experience Ana’s struggle with learning everything that’s forced at her in order to save the ones she loves.

Well, I kind of relate! For years, I wrote for my eyes only. I knew I had it in me to go from short stories to novels, but I think deep inside I knew that would create a wider audience. And that audience might love or hate what I write! Aaah! That’s kind of scary concept! I haven’t generally been someone who stops doing something because of fear, so I wondered why, when it has to do with something I am so passionate about , would I chicken out? The only thing I could come up with was fear of failure, and then I realized if I defined my own definition of success there is no such thing as failure! Haha! Pretty tricky. I am so thankful that I didn’t let my own fear stop me from continuing to pursue my passion, which is more than writing. I realized I wanted to be able to help make someone’s day a little brighter. I wanted to be able to lift someone out of their world and drop them into one that I created so that they could forget about their worries of the moment and indulge in a fantasy that they could help create.

Anyway, I hope that everyone reading this will try to do something that is a little out of their comfort zone. I hope that you will do or try something that you’ve been dying to do. Whether it is signing up for a pottery class, zip-lining down a mountain, or just saying hi to a guy at a café, I want you to go for it because it is a lot cooler to see what transpires in the here and now versus fantasizing about what could have been.

Now for what I promised you guys, a snippet from Legions, Book 2 of The Watchers Trilogy. Hope you enjoy!!

Excerpt from The Watchers Trilogy: Legions (Book 2 of The Watchers Trilogy)

“Do you know who she might be? Is she a major player?” Watching Cyril and Arie look at each other as they both began to fidget told me everything I needed to know.

“Her name is Lilith. She’s truly the epitome of evil.” Arie took a deep breath in. “Her type’s been around longer than any of us. She’s part of the Lamiai. They have the ability to seduce men by luring them with their beauty. She knows what she’s got, and she knows how to use it, both with mankind and in the underworld. As you saw, she can encompass beauty in a blink of an eye. Her true form, though, leaves her with a serpent tail and fiery red hair. Unfortunately, when she’s in one of her other forms, no one can see it including us.”

“I could feel it. That’s gotta count for something. Obviously Athen can feel it too, judging by his recent reading selection. So, what’s her goal?” I inquired. It seemed odd that all she would care about is seducing mankind and the underworld.

“Her goal is to reek havoc – create distractions. Throw her into the mix of any situation, and you’ve just added an unpleasant element. But you don’t need to be told that. You’ve seen it firsthand.”

That last shot was like a nail gun aimed directly at my soul.

“It seems so peculiar that someone with her clout would be involved in something to do with us.”

“Well, our lineage is such that…” Arie stopped herself. Her green eyes looking as if they lost some of the usual glow I was used to seeing.

“What? It takes one to know one? Or are we so super powerful it takes someone like her? Come on. I can’t take much more of this. Why don’t you just tell me everything all at once.” I was full of contention and spite, my eyes wouldn’t stop darting around the room, I was about to explode. I was tired of knowing half-truths. It seemed the last three months had been full of almosts and not quites, and I was tired of it. I needed to know what I was facing. What we were facing.

Thanks so much for stopping by Karice! Warm Bodies does sound really good. I really need to pick that one up. I think I’m the last person in the world who hasn’t read it! lol Also great message about having a little courage. It can be hard at times, but can make a huge difference in making your own dreams happen :)

Also thanks so much for the sneak peek at Legions!

Awakening by Karice Bolton

Alone in snowy, remote Whistler village, Ana tries to build a new life since losing her parents. With a cozy condo, a sweet-faced bulldog and an evening job to leave the days free for the slopes, life slips into a great routine. If only she could shake the guilt for not remembering anything about her parents and banish the night terrors that haunt her every dream. On a whim, Ana goes out with Athen, a guy she’s just met in the Grizzly Pub… The only problem is that she feels like she already knows him. Within 48 hours of meeting Athen and his family, Ana’s world implodes.

She falls for Athen quickly and before she knows it, a past life begins to resurface. As thrilling as the revelations appear at first, she fights against the chilling information that Athen is from the underworld. Soon she begins to struggle as her own supernatural gifts are slowly unveiled, and she realizes that the nightmares she’s been having might be premonitions and not dreams at all.

It is up to Ana to decipher between fact and fiction before it is too late, and her new love, Athen, follows in her same fate – one that is lost between two worlds.
