In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After existing in secret for many long centuries, maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the entire vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order—a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike—to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire at the center of the conflict, before his push for domination can explode into catastrophe.
At the center of the Order’s quest is Sterling Chase, once a morally rigid enforcer of Breed law, now a warrior fallen from grace, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. With addiction beckoning him toward eternal darkness, Chase’s path to redemption has never seemed more out of reach—until he finds himself drawn to a beautiful young woman who may be something much more than she seems . . .
My Review:
Amongst Midnight Breed fans, Chase’s story has been long-coming and anxiously-awaited. He’s had it quite rough throughout the series, and I know that I personally have had a big soft spot for him along the way. I knew that when his story came along it would need to be something really special to make up for all the stuff poor Chase has gone through. Thankfully, it definitely was and then some!
I first off want to say that I am so happy with who Chase ended up with. She’s perfect for him. What I loved about Tavia is that she’s so different from not only the other heroines in this series, but from a lot of female heroines you read about in general. Sometimes I feel like the females in paranormal romances are either Ms. Tough Pants who never opens up for fear of getting hurt, or Ms. Softy who is way too clingy and annoying. But Tavia is right in between. My favorite interactions between the two were moments of pure tenderness that Tavia would show towards Chase. He needed this so bad. Times where she could sense his conflicting emotions and would simply reach out and hold his hand, and that’s it. That right there is love, and those small moments are something you don’t see often in romance novels for some reason.
But what else is really cool about this book is something I can’t say! I feel like the real clinker with this one — the punch line if you will — is something that is so spoilerish that I can’t even talk about it! But let’s just say that I think it’s pretty awesome. This book marks a real turning point in the series (for several reasons actually) that I didn’t see coming from a mile away. I love that Adrian did something special with her series that you really never see in paranormal romances, and I’m so excited to see where it goes!
Overall, this was another great Midnight Breed novel. I think Chase definitely got a story deserving of him, but the book took some other twists and turns within the world around them that I think are going to be so exciting to read about in the books to come! I really can’t wait. This series, for me at least, is one that just gets better and better.
