Mercedes “Mercy” Thompson is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy’s next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy’s connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water…
My Review:
I’ve had Moon Called on my to-read list for a good five years, and for some reason I’ve never gotten around to reading it until now. Part of it, I think, is because I was (from the cover and description), expecting Mercy to be one of those bitchy, better-than-thou kind of heroines. Being that she’s a mechanic and just the look of the cover, that’s kind of what I expected. While yes, she is a strong heroine, she’s definitely not bitchy and I was glad to see that.
I’m also glad I got past my initial qualms because this was a great book set in a dynamic paranormal world that is only partially out of he closet to humans. Most of the paranormals are still hidden, but pretty much on the verge of coming out so the series should be interesting as that progresses.
The story kept me on my toes and the touch of mystery I didn’t even come close to figuring out. But my favorite thing was definitely the blossoming dynamic between Mercy, Adam, and Samuel. I’m not huge on love triangles, but I can already tell this one’s going to be an exception to that rule. I’m already probably a little too entertained by the Adam-Samuel shows of power between each other. It’s just plain fun.
So yeah, this one has everything I could ask for in a good urban fantasy: great writing that keeps me in the story, an interesting and dynamic world, and characters that come to life. I’ll definitely be continuing on with this series.
