Live fast, fight hard and if you have to die then take as many of your enemies with you as you can. That is the Amazon credo and it was one Samia lived and died by. Now in contemporary New Orleans, the immortal Amazon warrior is about to learn that there’s a worse evil coming to slaughter mankind than she’s ever faced before.
Shapeshifter Dev Peltier has stood guard at the front of Sanctuary for almost two hundred years and in that time, he’s seen it all. Or so he thought. Now their enemies have discovered a new source of power- one that makes a mockery of anything faced to date.
The war is on and Dev and Sam are guarding ground zero. But in order to win, they will have to break the most cardinal of all rules and pray it doesn’t unravel the universe as we know it.
My Review:
As someone who was really looking forward to Dev’s book, I have to say I was pretty disappointed by this. It wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t as good as I’ve come to expect from this series, especially since Dev’s book is a highly anticipated one. I think where it fell short was just the overall flow of the story. It just seemed a bit disconnected and random to me. Kenyon has a pretty good talent for connecting the dots, even if certain things seem to come out of nowhere, but I didn’t feel like that was done very well in this book.
Aside from the story I liked Sam/Samia and (of course) Dev. More than anything Dev made this book. He’s funny and sarcastic and I very much enjoyed his character. He really came across as everything I expected him to be after getting glimpses of him from the previous books. Him and Sam connected fairly quickly and I thought they fit together pretty well.
But the story for this one? Yeah, it was just random to me and that’s where the book fell short. Normally with books in this series I get pretty sucked into them (with the exception of the Dream Hunter books). So I was really surprised that I didn’t get lost in this one.
First off, for someone who has been around as a Dark-Hunter for awhile, Sam is pretty clueless about everything going on around her. She didn’t even know anything about Stryker? That just seems odd. I know she just got into town, but still.
Then this whole plotline with Stryker wanting her to find Apollo’s weaknesses could’ve worked without this whole magical garter business. It was never really explained why this magical garter would keep Sam safe from Stryker. So they go on this mission to find it and while that part of the story was kind of cool, it made no sense. Then they get back from that mission only to have her kidnapped by Stryker anyways — which, as it turns out wasn’t such a big deal in the end.
Oh yeah, and where does Thorn fit into any of this? Why would he care if Samia was kidnapped by Stryker? None of this made sense! lol
So, overall this was definitely one of the weaker books in the series, which is hugely disappointing given that it’s Dev’s book. The characters themselves were cool, but the story just didn’t feel very well thought out at all and that alone brought down the whole book. While I did still enjoy it simply because I love the layered and rich world Kenyon has created, my fascination with the DH world wasn’t enough to get past the fact that the story made no sense. If you’re wanting to get started in this series, don’t start here. lol
