YA dark fantasy books usually have Gothic elements (black dresses, cemeteries, crows and ravens, death, ruined castles) and characters with supernatural abilities (shifters, angels, werewolves and shifters). Plus of course, a tragic or star-crossed romance. That adds up to a thrilling, emotional read with themes that resonate—with teen readers especially, but the depth of dark fantasy books can be entertaining for older readers as well (anybody who enjoys Edgar Allan Poe can appreciate the themes in Kate Lauren’s Fallen.)

Below is a list of some of our favorite dark fantasy & paranormal romance YA books. So if you need to get your fix, check these out and add some to your TBR list!

But before she turned eighteen, she met an alluring young man to whom she gave all her secrets, and who told her that she was special. But he’s not the only one looking for her. Now Kaidance, after escaping for her life, is living at a mansion and learning how to control her abilities. Abilities that are so powerful, even the gods get jealous. She must be careful, especially now that her would-be killer is starting to fall for her.

What do the readers say?

  • “I love books about mythology and when I find those books that have a unique take on the myths, it’s even better. This book has the main characters of mythology, but it’s not always obvious. Figuring out who is who was part of the fun for me while I read it. The fact that the main character, Kaidance, isn’t connected to the retelling of Persephone or one of the other main mythology stories really made this a more interesting read.” – DyannaAmazon user. Touched: The Caress of Fate by Elisa S. Amore

touched-elise-amore

When Gemma meets the mysterious and captivating Evan James, a shadow starts creeping into her own life. Suddenly she’s on her way to face her destiny – all thanks to Even, who’s actually a soldier of Death. Gemma has to die, and Evan has to kill her. But what if she starts to fall for him?

What do the readers say?

  • “This book is so romantic. It goes beyond swoon-worthy, and heart-stopping, into a realm all on its own… Although they feel an instant connection or attraction, their love story is a slow, gradual sensual build-up that had me feeling everything Gemma and Evan felt. Which brings me nicely onto emotional complexity and characterisation. Both of which were superb in this book… I felt every emotion skin-deep, heart-deep. I felt the pain, heartache, joy, longing, and the frantic urgency to save one another. Be still my heart. Those sections, in particular, were stunningly written. So poetic. Beautiful.” – Siobhan Davisauthor and Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]

Clara is forced to navigate a world of unseen dangers and uncertainties, and all the while she has to be sure she’s ready to face her destiny.

What do the readers say?

  • “Unearthly is a delightful read, focusing on Nephilim, or as they prefer in this book angel-blood. The writing is paced wonderfully and the story gripped me right away. Cynthia has created likable and easy to relate with characters, that I was emotionally invested in.” – Brandi Leigh KosinerAmazon user. [Review from Amazon]

What do the readers say?

  • “This book is a winner, and its author has it going on with this lineup of unique characters and their “beginning-after-the-end” post-apocalyptic backdrop. There an experience here that’s definitely worth expanding on; I’m already looking forward to the next book in this series.” – Robert GryphonAmazon user. [Review from Amazon]

And it’s getting harder, as she keeps having nightmares of a desert journey, and hallucinations of women weeping blood. When Helen crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she does not know that both of them will be players in the recreation of an ancient tragedy that the Fates keep on repeating.

What do the readers say?

  • “The best thing about Starcrossed is that while you are kept in plenty of suspense to keep you sucked in, you are also given just the right amount of information to ensure that you never get overwhelmed or frustrated from a lack of information… I’m really eager to see what happens next as there was a twist at the ends that can only spell trouble for the future… Prepared to be sucked in from almost the start and make sure to give yourself plenty of time to read this one as you won’t be able to put it down. Definitely a fantastic debut that you won’t want to miss if you are a fan of mythology in the YA genre.” – A Book ObsessionAmazon user. [Review from Amazon]

Something supernatural. And now Piper suddenly has to deal with her past again – someone wants to kill her, and it terrifies her as much as her connection with Zane terrifies her.

What do the readers say?

  • “The romance between Zane and Piper is… unique in that their interactions were natural and entertaining and not stilted and awkward like you might find in other romances. Piper’s internal dialogue will make you laugh out loud, and Zane’s frustratingly gorgeous good looks will have you swooning at the turn of every page. All and all, I gave this book five stars because it captured, and held, my attention for the solid three hours I spent reading it. Can’t wait to read the sequel!” – Princess Aud 🙂Amazon user. The two are brought together by a project in literature class, Isobel slowly gets pulled into Varen’s world – a world influenced by Poe, a world created by Varen’s mind. Isobel is the only one who can save Varen from his nightmares. But to save Varen, Isobel must also protect herself from the nightmares haunting him.

What do the readers say?

  • “Creagh takes its time developing the plot, giving the characters good motives for their actions and allowing you to feel like these are people whose actions and psychology you can comprehend. She does a great job of describing a brand-new, scary, chilling dimension, so much so that I actually saw a Noc in a nightmare shortly after finishing this novel. She adeptly weaves well-researched facts into edgy, dark fiction that made me look at some of Poe’s darkest work from new perspectives.” – S. MelderAmazon user. [Review from Amazon]

  • “This is one of those types of books that I definitely recommend keeping an open mind while reading and just go with the flow of the story. It’s not going to be a book that will appeal to everyone, but for those who like YA books which go off into the realm of the unexpected, this is well worth the consideration. What do the readers say?

  • “I loved the storyline that included Hannah, Josh (the hot Native American), and Hannah’s brother Ben. There were aspects of reincarnation, animal spirit guides, a wise medicine man, and skinwalkers (think of evil ghosts that can change into people or animals) that drew me in and had me hooked. There was romance, humor, horror, and history all wrapped in this book that made it a joy to read.” – KrissiMicheleAmazon user. [Review from Amazon]

What do the readers say?

  • “I really loved this book. From the first page I was totally hooked and couldn’t put it down until I was finished. I loved all the characters, they were really well developed and fun to get to know. The plot was very engaging and had some twists and surprises that I definitely wasn’t expecting. There isn’t a lot of romance in this book, but the little there was, was very cute and promising for future books. The idea for this story was unique and different from anything else I have ever read. I enjoyed Katlyn’s writing and I am really surprised that this is her debut novel. While there isn’t a cliffhanger at the end of this book, which I appreciated, I still can’t wait to see what happens next. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys clean fun YA Paranormal books, it will not disappoint.” Dark Faerie Tales, Amazon user. [Review from Amazon]
