The red queen

Summary: There are no new stories, but that doesn't mean the old ones can't get a face lift.

One of the best first chapters I've read in a long time

User Rating: 2.7 (1 votes)

Spoiler: this is basically Cinderella meets Hunger Games meets meets Xmen.

Or as one reviewer says,

I couldn’t help but notice and compare this book to a ton of other YA books (I thought of The Selection, Divergent, Hunger Games, even Harry Potter while I was reading).

I don’t think it’s a big deal if The Red Queen reminds us of other bestselling books that we love. It is kind of annoying to see all the bestselling books telling the same 10 stories over and over, with less and less originality. I could sum up the plot of EVERY young adult book and be right 50% of the time with something like this:

“Rags to riches story where poor girl has to discover her powers and her true place in the world and lead a revolution and probably end up with a prince.”

But ignore all of that – because this book is good. I can skim first chapters all day long and rarely be motivated to continue reading. There are just too many books. So this book is a winner just because the first few chapters are exciting and heart breaking and tragic. So much meaning and emotion immediately. It’s well done.
