Dating the Prince of Darkness has its challenges…
Leila’s psychic abilities have been failing her, and now she isn’t sure what the future holds. If that weren’t enough, her lover, Vlad, has been acting distant. Though Leila is a mere mortal, she’s also a modern woman who refuses to accept the cold shoulder treatment forever–especially from the darkly handsome vampire who still won’t admit that he loves her.Like choosing between eternal love and a loveless eternity…
Soon circumstances send Leila back to the carnival circuit, where tragedy strikes. And when she finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer who may be closer than she realizes, Leila must decide who to trust– the fiery vampire who arouses her passions like no other or the tortured knight who longs to be more than a friend? With danger stalking her every step of the way, all it takes is one wrong move to damn her for eternity.
My Review:
Twice Tempted continues the love story between one of Night Huntress fans’ favorite characters, Vlad, and the never-to-be-underestimated Leila. I think when Once Burned came out Leila had her work cut out for her in garnering the approval of Vlad’s devoted fans. For me at least she did that and then some. She may start out as “only human” but she also has some pretty incredible abilities even before their story began. I actually think that her connection with electricity couldn’t be better complimented than with Vlad’s fire abilities.
But aside from who has the coolest powers I think Leila has really stood well on her own for this and the first book in the series. Some of my favorite things about her are that she is honest with herself about her feelings towards Vlad, but she’s also not unrealistic as what to expect from him — while at the same time knowing when she’s not being treated as good as she deserves. I like that she has realistic reactions to Vlad’s fiery personality and that she can really hold her own against him as a female.
Vlad in this book is a bit distant. I think he’s really struggling with wanting to let go and outwardly feel for Leila. He makes some great strides throughout the book though and I think given how much we’ve learned about him in the past, his growth was well-written and not too easy or “fluffy”.
While both Leila and Vlad learn how best to love each other in Twice Tempted, a murderer seems to have it out for Leila. After making her way back to the traveling circus she used to be apart of with vampire friend Marty, she is shocked to find someone targeting her. After this first attempt she narrowly averts being killed several other times before discovering who is after her. The story for this one was just as exciting in the first and in a way ties into the story from the first book so it appears there will be an on-going back-story there.
Overall I definitely enjoyed this book. I jumped into it and easily lost myself to the action and love story between Leila and Vlad. They might not be Cat and Bones, but I actually find that to be refreshing too. While I do love Cat and Bones, their relationship is sort of at a very even keel right now, which can be a little bit boring to read about. So I’m happy to have another kick ass team to follow from the imaginative mind of Jeaniene Frost.
