Everneath is one of those books that first grabs you with it’s incredible cover, then peaks your curiosity even more when it takes the book community by storm. I couldn’t wait to get my hand on it. But sometimes, those books that seem to be the most popular can disappoint the most because of too high expectations. Thankfully Everneath lived up to the hype and I really enjoyed this one.
I’m actually not a big fan of mythology. Perhaps it’s because I don’t know too many of the original stories, but I generally don’t love the mythology re-tellings. But this one was so original and horrifying, yet at the same time beautiful that I couldn’t help but love it.
The one (or make that two) flaws with Everneath (in my opinion) is that it starts off a bit slow, and it leaves off with a bit of a cliffhanger. Things sort of wrap up, but there’s still some huge things left hanging that need solving…like now! As for the beginning it was a little slow going and I wasn’t sure where the story was heading but then it took a much needed turn for the best and it became this huge page-turner for me, after which I couldn’t put it down.
It’s really hard to explain what this book is about. I wasn’t familiar with the original mythology, but it’s a retelling of the myth of Persephone and Hades. Hades drags Persephone to hell and then some stuff happens. Blah, blah blah. I’m not clear on the whole deal. What I do know, is that this was a really cool story. My heart seriously was breaking for Nikki, Jack, and even sometimes Cole (I think he has more to his story than he shows us in this book). I had my fingers crossed that things would work out for everyone, but at the same time I knew they wouldn’t really work out in this book per se, since it’s going to be a trilogy.
Either way though, this was a great book. I definitely recommend it for any young adult urban fantasy fan. You don’t have to be a fan of mythology, cause I’m not really! Just be prepared for a bit of confusion at the beginning trying to understand how the Everneath works, but I think it’s explained pretty well throughout while still leaving some things a mystery for the next book. I definitely can’t wait to read the next one, I need to know what happens!
