Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’ voodoo queen just keeps on giving–leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he takes physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive. This year, however, a determined Cat and Bones must risk all to send him back to the other side of eternity–forever. But how do you kill a killer who’s already long dead?
My Review:

I feel like I’m sort of betraying my love for Night Huntress. But, it’s important for me to be honest and fairly rate/review all the books I read without being biased to my favorite series’. Although I could probably fluff this up because I do really love Night Huntress and Cat and Bones and the whole gang, I’m not going to. I didn’t hate this, but it is probably my least favorite Night Huntress book (I even liked Destined for an Early Grave better).

My biggest peeve with the book is that the “villain” and the “conflict” wasn’t very exciting. I didn’t find the situation they were in to be dire and the sense of urgency you usually feel with a really good conflict just wasn’t there. It just felt like another job that they were bound to win and really didn’t have much trouble along the way. This made for a fairly boring story.

Now, when I say boring, there is some good to that. I’m very happy to see that Cat and Bones are blissfully happy again. After the rollercoaster of a relationship they’ve had down the road, it’s a nice change of pace. But at the same time, I think the conflict outside their relationship could have been taken up a notch. It is good to see how far their relationship has come and how mature they are as a couple now, though.

Other things that bugged me…There wasn’t much humor. In the previous books there’s always a bit of sarcastic humor between Cat and Bones, and that was pretty much gone. There was some, but I really didn’t laugh out loud at all during this one. In addition, the steaminess between Cat and Bones was not very steamy at all. I get that their relationship is more at a mature level than a sexual level. But, I still would’ve liked some more steam. There was also absolutely no Vlad whatsoever. Not even an honorable mention. I know he’s getting his own series here soon so I don’t know if that’s why. But he brings so much personality to the table that I think the story really lacked due to his absence.

So overall, I was kind of disappointed in this. Night Huntress is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series so it was nice to just be back in the world with my favorite characters. But unfortunately that wasn’t enough for me. I kind of wish Jeaniene would introduce a bigger villain that could span multiple books instead of them defeating the villain by the end of each book. I think this would add a much needed layer to the series.
