Succubus Dreams is probably the most depressing book in the series so far. It’s not like anything extremely tragic happens, but the reality of Georgina and Seth’s relationship starts to ring true and Georgina’s life seems to be spiraling out of control no matter what she does. The overall mood of the book was a bit darker and sad than the previous books in the series so far.
I can’t say that I’m surprised that Georgina and Seth have hit rocky ground. From the start of their relationship it’s always seemed doomed and honestly it has always seemed like they’ve been together for the sheer forbidden air and novelty of it rather than out of real and true love for each other. At least that’s what it has felt like for me. But still, the turmoil between them was tough to read about and definitely sad. Although I don’t agree with Georgina’s lifestyle, she really has no choice about it, so she’s grown on me and I don’t like to see her getting hurt.
Other than the love story, the mystery for this one was good. I actually thought I had it figured out this time but it turns out I was wrong about a lot of things, so the surprise was nice. Richelle Mead does a good job at weaving a story that you feel like you can figure out but really is totally off in another direction.
Still though, this series isn’t my favorite urban fantasy. It has some major issues at the core of it. Georgina can truly be evil even if she doesn’t necessarily want to. I still have trouble with the things she has to do to good people and so there’s always that pit in my stomach about it all a little bit. I don’t know how this series will end up but I sort of hop that Georgina get’s out of being a succubus. If she wants to have a real life and relationship she will either have to do it with a very open immortal or by turning human again.
Overall, these are definitely entertaining books that are fun reads and leave you unknowingly attached to the characters whether you like it or not. But they can be unsettling too. The silver lining in Georgina’s life can sometimes be so small that it’s hard to see and easy to see how depressing it would get to be her on a daily basis. Let’s just say I’m glad I’m not a succubus.
