Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. Not for her license — for turning pretty. In Tally’s world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there. But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to be pretty. She’d rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world — and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
My Review:

When I first saw the title and read the description of this book, I wasn’t too sure how much I’d like it because it sounded a bit shallow and superficial.

But this was a GREAT book! I was so pleasantly surprised. Not only is the story really intriguing and keeps you from putting it down, but it also has a good message in that it makes you really step back and take a look at how we, as a society, place such a huge emphasis on looks. It’s a really literal way of looking at it, but it’s really interesting.

I loved the Tally and David characters. Even before “the operation” I couldn’t really get to liking Shay for some reason though. I can’t really pinpoint what it is. But I couldn’t really relate with her character. Although Tally betrayed a lot of people, for some reason her character was better developed and I related with her better. I also really liked David, but who couldn’t, he just seems like an awesome guy.

The one thing I didn’t like about the writing style of the book was that sometimes it would refer to Tally as “Tally” and sometimes “She”. It was kind of confusing, like it was kind of changing points of view here and there. That was a little annoying.

But anyways, I’m off to get the next one to find out what happens next!
