Edge of Dawn is quite literally the edge of a new era for both the Midnight Breed series and the world within the Midnight Breed books. At the end of the last book, Darker After Midnight, we left off with a very big cliffhanger — the humans finding out about the Breed. In Edge of Dawn the series jumps twenty years into the future, where humans and Breed are in the midst of a war and learning to live amongst each other.
Right off the bat this is one of my favorite things about the series. It’s really kind of amazing that more paranormal authors don’t take the leap into the future. Being that everyone in the series is immortal it opens up a lot of doors for allowing the world to change around them while still being able to follow the same characters. In this book we get Mira’s story, who was only about eight or so in the last Midnight Breed book, but is now twenty-seven. But since it’s been so long there are so many other new characters whose stories we get to look forward to — including children of the characters we got to know in the beginning of the series. I find this element so much fun! Not only has the world changed from more of an underground paranormal society to an out-right urban fantasy world where humans know about them, but we get to meet the children of our favorite characters now that it’s time for their stories. So I really loved that the books jumped twenty years into the future and I’m really looking forward to all the new stories to come.
As for Mira and Kellan’s story, it was good and I was excited to learn about them all over again as adults. Mira had little sparks of her younger self but has clearly grown up and matured. Kellan was a little bit harder to forgive for certain things he’s done, but along with Mira it became impossible not to love him all over again. So all-in-all I enjoyed their story.
Aside from Mira and Kellan we also got to jump back into Lucan’s POV and get glimpses of the old characters and their children. There are a few I’m particularly excited to read about, but there’s at least 10 new characters, so lots more books to come!
Overall this was a great book. The only place I think it lacked a little compared to the other books in the series was the action. It did have some but I remember the previous books having a bit more. I think this was due to have to re-setup the world again since it’s changed so much. That alone made up for it in my opinion. Still loving this series — actually loving it even more than before — so I’m happy to see that there are lots more books to come now that all of the originals have had their stories told.
