Juliet Immortal is a retelling (of sorts) of Romeo & Juliet. The only reason I hesitate to call this a full-out retelling is because it takes place after the events in Romeo & Juliet, but it edits what “really” happened and how that original story “got it wrong”.
I thought this was a pretty creative and interesting book, and a completely out there kind of take on Romeo & Juliet. The story was still pretty tragic like the original tale, but with a really cool paranormal twist that I found to be pretty entertaining to read about. Where I think the story lacked though was in the mechanics of this world. Without giving anything away, the reasoning behind who/what Romeo and Juliet are at this point was not very well explained. We’re given an idea, but some of the workings and possibilities seemed out there and disconnected. For example, the way it ended really made no sense to me. It seemed like a bit of a stretch so I was shaking my head a bit.
But the actual getting there was quite fun. I enjoyed this world and I liked Juliet/Ariel, who’s POV we’re in most of the time. I was kind of disappointed in the romance aspect of it. Although I love retellings, and I found this to be really interesting, I wasn’t a big fan of such a huge change in R/J’s romance. I wish it could’ve been different, but that’s not the story this was about.
Overall, I thought this was pretty cool. Like I said above, it’s quite a creative and (if possible) even more tragic twist on THE classic love story and for that I have to hand it to Stacey Jay for coming up with something very interesting and unique. It was a bit out there though and I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. Still, if you’re a fan of retellings then you’d probably enjoy this. But, if you’re a big fan of Romeo & Juliet then this might just break your heart. lol
