Lord’s Fall takes us back into the lives of the couple that started the Elder Races series to begin with — Pia and Dragos. At first I wasn’t sure how I would like this. I loved Pia and Dragos but the series is in a more paranormal romance format so it was hard to see how they could get another book entirely about their relationship.
But Lord’s Fall really reads more like an urban fantasy than a paranormal romance. It has lots of story and while we do get to see Pia and Dragos’ relationship grow as Pia is now pregnant, the majority of the book focuses on the story. Pia is off on a mission of her own trying to patch the rift between the Elves and the Wyrs that is due to a very longtime feud between Dragos and the Elven High Lord, Calondir. In the meantime Dragos is heading up the Sentential Games in an effort to replace the two Sentential’s who have been mated and left his guard in the past few years.
I think the mere fact that the romance takes second stage in this book can make or break it depending on what you expect going into it. I sort of expected this format so I enjoyed the story rather than only looking forward to whenever the romance would come along. But if you aren’t a fan of that format then you might be disappointed simply because it’s not all about the romance in this book. I personally liked it actually and seeing Pia and Dragos grow closer because of working together to get through some obstacles outside of their relationship was more rewarding for me than seeing them in the sack every couple of pages. So I thought this was done really well and I enjoyed it a lot. Honestly I wouldn’t mind having more Pia and Dragos books in the future like this, they make an awesome team.
So overall I was definitely happy with this one and Pia and Dragos still are one of my favorite PNR couples. They’re just so real with each other, I love it. I’m happy to see that Thea Harrison has a great talent not only for writing romance and relationships, but for writing an exciting story with lots of action and mystery. I’d read more about Pia and Dragos anytime!
