Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home. When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.
My Review:
This is one of those books that left me feeling a little bit confused. I’m not sure how I felt about it. It wasn’t very thrilling and I wasn’t exactly jumping up and down when I had to pick it up. But, I didn’t hate it either. It had some fantastic visuals and I could see this book easily transferring to the big screen, as I was able to visualize everything very clearly while reading.
I think what it comes down to is that Fae books are just not my thing. I’ve tried some other Fae stories and wasn’t too successful, and this was no different. I’m not sure what it is. I think maybe it’s that Fae worlds tend to be almost morbidly dark with no light at the end of the tunnel. Fae folk, even the “good guys”, tend to be cruel and heartless for the most part. I think this is why I’m not a big fan of the genre. I always like at least some kind of brightness in the dark worlds I dive into.
Aside from the amazing visuals this book has, I thought the character building was a bit lacking. I wasn’t attached to really any of the characters and found it hard to connect with them. Meghan was an okay heroine, but I found her a little flat. She’s just the typical “I’ll do anything for my friends” strong, yet weak at the same time, heroine. I didn’t find anything too special about her really.
So overall, this wasn’t really my cup of tea. But, I can’t justify giving it any less than three stars because the author has a great writing style that flows really well, the visuals are fantastic, and the imagination of the story is amazing and truly unique. I could see every scene very clearly. I don’t know if I’ll continue the series at this point though. I’m not really bouncing up and down for the next one right now, but maybe I’ll come back to it later.
